New Nakasi Market Opens: A Fresh Start for Vendors in Fiji

The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, inaugurated the new Nakasi market, a $1.98 million facility designed to host 100 vendors.

Nalumisa highlighted that the Nakasi Market reflects the Coalition Government’s dedication to the National Development Plan, which focuses on empowering the people of Fiji through unity.

For years, many vendors faced difficulties working in less-than-ideal conditions along the Nasinu and Nausori corridors. The new market provides a clean and safe environment that honors their work and offers a respectable space for expanding their businesses.

According to Nalumisa, the market symbolizes opportunity and empowerment. He emphasized that the initiative transcends mere commerce, aiming to uplift both individuals and communities. The investment in this facility represents not only financial commitment but also a belief in the human potential and future of Nakasi, Nausori, and Fiji.

The new market includes restrooms for vendors and parking for customers, catering to the needs of a growing urban area like Nakasi. Nalumisa noted that this achievement resulted from teamwork among the Nausori Town Council, the Government, and the Fiji Corrections Service, which provided the land for the project.

The government is dedicated to ensuring appropriate laws and regulations are enforced in municipal markets throughout Fiji. Nalumisa stated that the new market regulations will enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in managing municipal markets.

He concluded by acknowledging the Nakasi Market’s significance in promoting food security, boosting local government revenue, and supporting community vitality.
