New Nakasi Market Opens: A Boost for Local Vendors and Community Empowerment

The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, inaugurated the new Nakasi market yesterday, which has been developed at a cost of $1.98 million and will host 100 vendors.

During the opening, Nalumisa highlighted the market as a reflection of the Coalition Government’s dedication to Fiji’s National Development Plan, aimed at empowering citizens through unity. He noted that vendors previously operated under difficult conditions along the Nasinu and Nausori corridors, but now they have access to a new, clean, and secure market that enhances their livelihoods and provides a dignified space for business growth.

Mr. Nalumisa stated that the facility represents both opportunity and empowerment for its users. He emphasized that the investment is not merely financial but also an investment in the human potential and future prosperity of Nakasi, Nausori, and the wider Fiji region.

The newly constructed market includes restroom facilities for vendors and parking for customers, which Nalumisa described as essential for the developing urban area of Nakasi. He credited the successful establishment of the market to the cooperation among the Nausori Town Council, the Government, and the Fiji Corrections Service, which provided the land for the project.

Moreover, Nalumisa assured that the government is committed to implementing necessary laws and regulations for municipal markets throughout Fiji. He expressed that the introduction of new market regulations aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in management. This initiative aims to create a thriving environment for businesses and ensure vendors can work with dignity and security. According to Nalumisa, the Nakasi market plays a crucial role in contributing to food security, boosting local government revenue, and promoting community vitality.
