New Nakasi Market: A Hub of Opportunity and Growth for Vendors

The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, inaugurated the new Nakasi market yesterday, which has been constructed at a cost of $1.98 million and will provide space for 100 vendors.

Nalumisa highlighted that the Nakasi Market reflects the Coalition Government’s dedication to the National Development Plan, aimed at empowering the people of Fiji through unity. He noted that many vendors previously worked in difficult conditions along the Nasinu and Nausori corridors, and the new market offers them a clean and secure environment that enhances their pride and offers opportunities for business growth.

He emphasized that the market is a symbol of empowerment and opportunity for vendors, stating, “This is not just commerce, it is about empowering individuals and communities.” The investment in the facility represents not only financial support but also an investment in human potential and the future of Nakasi, Nausori, and Fiji as a whole.

The new market includes restroom facilities for vendors and parking for customers, addressing the necessities of the growing urban area of Nakasi. This project resulted from collaboration between the Nausori Town Council, the Government, and the Fiji Corrections Service, which provided the land.

Nalumisa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing necessary laws and regulations in municipal markets throughout Fiji. He stated, “We are enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the management of all municipal markets with the new market regulations.” The Nakasi Market is critical for ensuring food security, generating local government revenue, and nurturing community vitality.
