The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, inaugurated the new Nakasi market yesterday, which has been built at a cost of $1.98 million and will accommodate 100 vendors.
Nalumisa emphasized that the Nakasi Market showcases the Coalition Government’s dedication to the National Development Plan, which focuses on empowering the people of Fiji through unity. He noted that for years, many vendors operated in difficult conditions along the Nasinu and Nausori corridors. The new market presents them with a clean and secure environment that enhances their livelihoods and provides a dignified space for business growth.
Mr. Nalumisa remarked that this facility represents an opportunity for empowerment among the vendors, stating, “This is not just commerce; it is about empowering individuals and communities.” He further highlighted that the $1.98 million investment in the market is an investment in human potential and the future of Nakasi, Nausori, and Fiji.
The new market facility includes restroom amenities for vendors and customer parking, which Nalumisa identified as essential for a developing urban region like Nakasi. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Nausori Town Council, the Government, and the Fiji Corrections Service, which donated the land for this project.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to establishing the necessary laws and regulations within municipal markets throughout Fiji. He stated, “We are enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the management of all municipal markets with the new market regulations.” Nalumisa emphasized that the Nakasi Market plays a crucial role in ensuring food security, generating local government revenue, and promoting community vitality.
