Newly appointed Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has outlined her primary goals focusing on women’s empowerment, child protection, support for vulnerable communities, and the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).

Recognizing her predecessor, Lynda Tabuya, Ms. Kiran praised Tabuya’s commitment and leadership, which she believes has laid a solid groundwork for advancing the ministry’s objectives. As she embarks on this new role, Ms. Kiran committed to tackling the ongoing challenges in society, emphasizing the ministry’s mission to advocate, inspire, and ensure that nobody in Fiji is forgotten.

In her vision, Ms. Kiran highlighted the ongoing struggle for women’s empowerment, particularly following the recent challenges faced by Ms. Tabuya. She stressed that women are integral to the fabric of Fijian society, serving as pillars of families and communities. However, many still encounter barriers to achieving equality, safety, and equal opportunities. Ms. Kiran expressed a dedication to strengthening initiatives that support women’s economic empowerment and facilitate their leadership across all areas of life.

In another key focus area, Ms. Kiran declared that children represent the nation’s most valuable asset. She intends to prioritize their protection, education, and overall well-being, emphasizing the importance of combating child abuse and providing support to vulnerable families, so that children can grow in nurturing and secure environments.

Furthermore, she acknowledged the ministry’s responsibilities to often marginalized groups, including the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Ms. Kiran committed to reviewing and enhancing social protection programs to ensure they are inclusive and meet the needs of all citizens effectively.

This strategic emphasis on inclusion and support across various demographics illustrates a hopeful path toward building a more just and supportive society in Fiji. The commitment to these values suggests that positive change is on the horizon, fostering a culture of empowerment, safety, and opportunity for all.
