New Lifts Set to Revitalize Patient Care at CWM Hospital

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced that replacement lifts for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) are set to arrive next month. The Ministry has recognized the concerns regarding the non-functional patient lift and is collaborating with contracted service providers and relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, to resolve these issues.

The malfunctioning lift, situated in the West Wing of the hospital, has been operational for over fifteen years. The lift was originally purchased from New Zealand’s OTIS Elevator Company, whose engineers are currently on-site at CWM Hospital to address the problem. OTIS is also responsible for servicing the lifts at the hospital.

In 2023, the Ministry identified the need to replace aging lifts at CWMH. With governmental funding approved, they have initiated a procurement process to replace all old lifts in the hospital. Hospital lifts are critical as they transport patients, staff, and medical equipment, and they are designed to meet specific health and safety standards, including infection control requirements.

The failure of the lift has disrupted patient care, causing frustration among patients, families, and healthcare staff. In light of these challenges, the Ministry is appealing to patients and their families for patience as they strive to improve the infrastructure of health facilities across the country.

This initiative reflects a concerted effort towards enhancing healthcare services and ensuring that facilities are equipped to provide effective patient care. By addressing these infrastructural challenges, the Ministry is laying the groundwork for a more reliable healthcare system, which can ultimately have a positive impact on patient outcomes.
