New Lifeline for Yalobi: Upgraded Evacuation Centre Unveiled

The enhanced risk-informed evacuation centre was officially launched for the residents of Yalobi in Waya, Yasawa, on Wednesday. This facility will provide refuge for over 200 individuals during future disasters.

Developed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management in collaboration with the UN Development Programme’s (UNDP) Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific project (Gov4Res), the centre was constructed with an investment exceeding FJ$60,000.

The structure addresses multiple hazards faced by vulnerable members of the Yalobi community. It includes accessibility ramps for individuals with disabilities, an indoor kitchen, washrooms, and solar lighting.

These enhancements will promote safety and security for women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities in the event of a natural disaster.

During the inauguration event, locals shared memories of the harrowing experience during Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, when they had to trek uphill for three hours to find safety in a cave. In more recent crises, villagers often had to shelter in their homes due to the lack of a proper evacuation facility. The community expressed gratitude to the Government, donors, and UNDP for the timely support, noting that this development will significantly enhance their safety and well-being.

Jovesa Vocea, Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted the significance of risk-informed development in strengthening rural and maritime initiatives for long-term resilience.

He remarked, “The Yalobi Evacuation Centre is a lifeline for the residents of this village, not merely a building,” and added that the centre would also serve as a hub for community initiatives aimed at empowering residents, particularly women and youth.

In addition, the facility will host various socio-economic activities focused on uplifting the local community in Yalobi.

Nicola Glendining, project manager for UNDP Pacific Gov4Res, expressed pride in the collaboration with the Ministry to bolster the resilience of rural communities in Fiji while aligning with the Ministry’s strategic objectives.
