Attorney-General Graham Leung has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new Deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement follows Rabuku’s departure from his role as acting DPP five weeks earlier. The appointment was disclosed by acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva.
Leung previously advised Rabuku to step down from the acting DPP position after the Supreme Court deemed him ‘ineligible.’ He emphasized that according to the Constitution, the DPP has the authority to appoint their own staff, stating that such decisions rest solely with the DPP or their acting replacement, rather than the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General.
Leung also noted that if the acting DPP is on leave, it does not automatically imply that the deputy will take over responsibilities.
