New Leadership in Fiji’s Sugar Sector: Can Ram Revitalize the Industry?

Adrian Sunil Parshu Ram has been appointed as a director on the board of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), with his new role set to commence on April 1, 2025. He succeeds Athil Narayan, who has completed seven years of service on the board. FSC Chairman Nitya Reddy lauded Ram’s extensive experience in various legal fields, including insurance, commercial law, labor relations, taxation, and finance. Reddy emphasized that Ram’s expertise in litigation, mediation, dispute resolution, and business management will be crucial as the sugar industry navigates unprecedented challenges.

The Fiji sugar sector is currently facing its most significant trials in 150 years, marked by declining cane production, operational inefficiencies, deteriorating infrastructure, and rising costs. Chairman Reddy expressed the urgent need for strong leadership that can develop effective legal strategies to tackle these issues.

Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry, who endorsed Ram’s appointment, expressed optimism about his potential to enhance initiatives aimed at strengthening the sugar industry in Fiji. Ram’s strong educational foundation, holding degrees in Law and Commerce from the University of Queensland and an MBA from the University of the South Pacific, further enhances his capability to contribute positively to the FSC board.

In his new position, Ram is expected to bring a proactive and innovative approach, aligning with ongoing discussions held within the International Sugar Organization and collaborations with global industry players like Tate and Lyle. These efforts hint at a renewed sense of optimism for Fiji’s sugar industry as it aims for recovery and sustainable growth, ultimately benefiting local farmers and the broader economy.

This leadership transition exemplifies a commitment to sustainable practices and strategic governance in the sugar sector, providing a hopeful outlook for future advancements. With Ram’s legal acumen and the corporation’s dedication to navigating its significant challenges, there is anticipation that the FSC can revitalize the industry and foster economic resilience in Fiji.
