Ariff Ali, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, has announced the appointment of Caroline Pickering as the new Director of the Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), starting on January 1, 2025. The Director of the FIU is chosen by the Governor based on recommendations from the National Anti-Money Laundering Council.

Caroline Pickering, currently serving as the Manager of Policy and Compliance within the FIU, will take over the role from Razim Buksh, who retired in 2023. The Governor expressed confidence in Pickering’s ability to effectively lead the FIU into its next growth phase, citing her over 25 years of professional experience and her strategic leadership skills that are essential for navigating Fiji’s evolving digital financial landscape.

Having joined the FIU in 2006, Pickering has played a vital role in establishing Fiji’s regulatory and supervisory frameworks aimed at combating money laundering and financial crime. She has a significant background in collaborating with financial institutions and governmental bodies to ensure the implementation of regulatory safeguards against financial crime.

Before her tenure at the FIU, Pickering had over nine years of experience in the Office of the Auditor-General, where she held various audit and leadership positions. She holds degrees in accounting and economics from the University of the South Pacific and is a member of the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants.

The Governor of the Reserve Bank congratulated Pickering on her new role and anticipates her contributions to enhancing the integrity and safety of Fiji’s financial system as she takes on this important responsibility.

This leadership transition within the FIU heralds a promising era as Caroline Pickering steps into her new role with a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to curbing financial crimes in Fiji, ensuring the nation’s financial system remains secure and trustworthy for all stakeholders.
