Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo emphasized the importance of ethical conduct during the admission ceremony for 45 new lawyers at the Grand Pacific Hotel yesterday. He advised the newly admitted lawyers to familiarize themselves with the Code of Edicts as they embark on their legal careers.
“Good conduct is essential when entering the legal field after years of study,” Justice Temo stated. He highlighted the need for new lawyers to uphold integrity and professionalism, noting that ethical standards not only enhance the legal profession but also foster public trust.
Justice Temo urged the new lawyers to approach their work with diligence, respect for the law, and a commitment to justice, as this will enable them to positively contribute to the legal community and effectively serve their clients and society. He stressed that good conduct is a reflection of the ethical responsibilities lawyers hold in a diverse and dynamic society.
He pointed out that integrity and professionalism are crucial for maintaining justice and fairness in Fiji, and that they play a key role in fostering public trust and upholding the rule of law. “Encouraging good conduct helps to build a strong legal community and enhances the overall administration of justice in the country,” he added.
Justice Temo also shared a scenario highlighting the challenges faced by clients and lawyers, emphasizing the need for supportive and ethical behavior in the legal profession. He reminded the new lawyers that their reputation will be vital for their success in the field, stating, “If you work hard, we’ll recognize you.”
