New Lawyers Urged to Uphold Integrity and Ethics in Legal Profession

Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo emphasized the importance of ethical conduct for the 45 new lawyers who were admitted to the bar during a ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel. He urged them to revisit the Code of Edicts and familiarize themselves with its principles as they embark on their legal careers.

Justice Temo highlighted that maintaining good conduct is essential after years of rigorous study. He called on the new attorneys to embody integrity and professionalism within the legal field. Upholding ethical standards is crucial, he noted, as it not only strengthens the profession but also enhances public trust in the legal system.

The Chief Justice encouraged the new lawyers to approach their responsibilities with diligence, respect for the law, and a strong commitment to justice. By doing so, he stated, they will positively contribute to the legal community and serve their clients and society efficiently.

He underscored the significance of ethics in the legal profession, particularly in a diverse and dynamic society like Fiji. Emphasizing integrity and professionalism will help ensure that these new practitioners uphold the values of justice and fairness, which are vital for maintaining the rule of law.

Justice Temo pointed out that good conduct is essential for building a robust legal community and improving the overall administration of justice in the country. He stressed that honesty should be the cornerstone of a lawyer’s conduct as they enter the legal field.

He also shared a challenging scenario to highlight the importance of proper client treatment, noting that it can lead to stressful situations for all parties involved, including clients, lawyers, and judicial officers. He remarked that a positive relationship with the court is critical and that reputation will be key to success in the legal profession. Justice Temo assured the new lawyers that those who work hard will be recognized for their efforts.
