New Lawyers Urged to Uphold Ethics and Integrity in Legal Profession

Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo addressed the 45 newly admitted lawyers at the Grand Pacific Hotel yesterday, urging them to familiarize themselves with the Code of Edicts. He emphasized the need for maintaining good conduct as they enter the legal profession after years of study.

Justice Temo stressed that new lawyers must demonstrate integrity and professionalism, noting that ethical standards are essential for strengthening the legal profession and building public trust. He encouraged the new practitioners to approach their work with diligence, respecting the law and committing to justice. By doing so, he believes they can make a positive impact on the legal community and effectively serve their clients and society.

He highlighted the significance of ethics in the legal profession, particularly in a diverse and dynamic society. By promoting integrity and professionalism, he aims to instill the values of justice and fairness in the new lawyers, which are crucial for fostering public trust and upholding the rule of law in Fiji.

Justice Temo pointed out that encouraging good conduct not only helps in creating a robust legal community but also improves the overall administration of justice in the country. He stated that honesty is the fundamental quality lawyers should adopt upon entering the legal arena.

He shared a scenario reflecting the stress clients experience when they are not treated well, stressing that it is a challenging situation for everyone involved, including the counsel and judicial officers. He warned that the last thing needed in court is someone who is not supportive.

“The reputation you cultivate will determine your success in the legal field. Hard work will be recognized,” Justice Temo concluded.
