Selina Kuruleca, the newly appointed Permanent Secretary for Justice, has expressed her satisfaction with her new role, describing the environment at the Ministry of Justice as “toxic-free.” Her appointment, which took effect last month, comes after her reassignment from the Ministry of Education, a move believed to have been directed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
This change was not entirely unexpected, as tensions between Ms. Kuruleca and the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, had been reported. Mr. Radrodro openly criticized her appointment to PS Education on July 11, highlighting notable leadership differences. Despite objections from both Mr. Radrodro and teachers’ unions, who claimed that Ms. Kuruleca lacked the necessary experience for the role, the Public Service Commission had appointed her to the position in May.
During her speech at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions’ Annual Prosecution Conference in Sigatoka, Ms. Kuruleca confidently reflected on her brief tenure, emphasizing the positive atmosphere in her current position.
The transition to her new role marks an opportunity for her to demonstrate her skills in a more supportive environment, potentially leading to a more productive experience compared to her previous challenges in the Education Ministry.
In summary, Ms. Kuruleca’s move to the Ministry of Justice could signal an optimistic shift and represents a fresh start for her career, free from the toxicity she encountered in education administration. Her proactive approach and positive outlook might inspire a renewed sense of collaboration within the ministry, paving the way for effective governance and justice reform.
