The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens tournament is set to take place from December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori and has introduced exciting new by-laws to enhance the competition. Tournament director Solo Finau shared that a bonus points system has been implemented, aiming to benefit all participating teams.

The organizers are anticipating the participation of 80 teams across four tiers: Tier One for champion teams, Tier Two for regular teams, Tier Three dedicated to senior women’s teams, and Tier Four for Under-19 competitors. Finau emphasized that these innovative changes are designed to rejuvenate interest in sevens rugby across the nation, focusing on not only the financial aspect for the teams but also the development of players.

He remarked, “We want our local players to understand how to perform in challenging scenarios,” highlighting the importance of adaptability and skill in rugby. Finau referenced the success of drop goals in World Cup victories, suggesting that local teams can also leverage such strategies to enhance their gameplay.

In a move to add excitement to the tournament, instant rewards will be given right after matches. Individuals scoring a coast-to-coast try from within their own in-goal area will receive $100. Additionally, the team’s Captain will receive $100 for a successful coast-to-coast team try. Other cash prizes will be awarded for various achievements, including the highest number of converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals during the tournament.

Furthermore, teams have the chance to earn $100 if they match or surpass Alosio Naduva’s record of 6.78 seconds for the fastest team try, as long as they complete the task within a maximum of 14 seconds without stoppages from a new kickoff.

The Fiji Rugby Union has sanctioned this dynamic tournament, which will officially launch on December 6.

Overall, these developments show a commitment to enhancing the competitive spirit in Fijian rugby and creating opportunities for players and teams to showcase their talents while enjoying rewarding experiences. The upcoming tournament promises to be an engaging event that can positively influence local rugby participation and performance.
