The Self Care Retreat Hub in Nabua, dedicated to women cancer survivors, officially opened its doors yesterday, representing a major step forward in offering support for those affected by cancer.

Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of this new facility. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” Vavataga remarked. “They can come to rest here and find nourishment. It’s a safe space where they can discuss their experiences and the challenges they face.”

Founded in 2021, the NGO aims to support the spiritual, emotional, and mental healing of women who have survived cancer. Vavataga shared that twice a year, the organization takes a group of survivors to a hotel to foster relationships and build trust. Upon their return, they engage the participants in a three-week Bible study program that promotes spiritual and emotional healing, as well as personal transformation.

Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori, who officiated the opening ceremony, commended the initiative. “Thank you so much for setting up this hub as a safe haven, a refuge where individuals can connect with others who care,” he stated.

Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her inspiring journey at the event, recalling her past struggles. “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive,” she explained. Her testimony underscored the urgent need for support networks like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m really grateful for this organization because the aftercare post-cancer treatment can be quite lonely,” she added.

Vavataga also expressed her vision for the future, which includes plans to establish a hospice, noting that the hub’s opening is just the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji continues to depend on donations and partnerships to maintain its operations. “Even for this building, I had to shave my hair to raise funds,” she revealed, referencing her involvement in the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
