New HPV Initiative Sparks Hope in Fiji’s Fight Against Cervical Cancer

Recent findings reveal that nearly 137 women in Fiji have tested positive for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a leading cause of cervical cancer. These statistics emerged from a pilot HPV screen-and-treat program implemented by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in July 2024, targeting communities in Levuka, Galoa, and Lyndhurst.

During a recent handover event for HPV testing kits in Suva, Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu discussed the significance of the program, emphasizing that the positive screenings led to evaluations for potential treatment through thermal ablation, contingent on consent from the women involved. He noted that the pilot program highlighted the necessity of ongoing HPV screenings and immediate treatment availability, particularly for women who may face hurdles accessing healthcare due to financial, geographical, or social reasons.

The initiative funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is part of broader efforts to combat cervical cancer in Fiji as outlined in the new Cervical Cancer Elimination Policy for 2025-2030. Dr. Lalabalavu confirmed that regions across Fiji may exhibit varying HPV positivity rates, but many could align closely with recent findings.

UNFPA’s commitment extends further, as they plan to assist with the rollout of HPV testing in Fiji’s Northern Division by providing essential consumables and equipment for screening and treatment.

Women aged 30 to 59 years participating in the program will use self-collection methods for their samples, showcasing an innovative step towards improving accessibility and encouraging more women to engage in preventive healthcare practices.

These initiatives underscore a hopeful direction towards reducing cervical cancer rates in Fiji, as concerted efforts in health education and outreach can empower women to prioritize their health. The ongoing collaboration among health authorities and support from international organizations like UNFPA signals a commitment to achieving a cervical cancer-free Fiji, fostering a health-conscious society.
