New Guide Empowers Fiji’s Farmers for Sustainable Agriculture

Thousands of farmers nationwide can now benefit from the Ministry of Agriculture’s new crop and livestock guide aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices. This comprehensive guide introduces research-supported techniques for both crop and livestock farming, providing essential information to enhance productivity and support animal welfare for the first time.

Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu emphasized the guide’s significance, noting that it serves as a crucial resource as agriculture adapts to evolving challenges, including climate change and technological advancements. “The 2025 crop and livestock guide is a roadmap to empowering our farmers with the best possible knowledge and practices to drive sustainable growth in the sector,” he stated.

Kadir Khan, the Principal Agriculture Officer and Lead Editor, elaborated on the guide’s contents, which include yield periods and production levels for various plant varieties. The manual details the yielding capacities of different crops and advises farmers on suitable varieties for their lands, thereby equipping them with the technical knowledge needed to optimize their farming practices.

A total of 3,700 copies of the guide are available for distribution to rural and maritime communities, with digital access also provided through the Ministry’s online portal for those unable to secure a hard copy.

This initiative aligns with broader government efforts to empower farmers, as seen in recent agricultural events like the 2024 National Agriculture Show. At this event, Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka highlighted the theme of cultivating resilience through innovation and inclusiveness in climate-smart agriculture. The government’s ongoing initiatives, such as the Farm to Fork initiative, aim to enhance agricultural productivity while linking local farmers with the tourism sector, promoting sustainable practices.

Overall, these efforts reflect a commitment to supporting Fiji’s farmers with the resources and knowledge needed to overcome challenges, promote sustainable practices, and ultimately contribute to the country’s food security.

These initiatives mark a hopeful step towards a more resilient agricultural future in Fiji, as they equip farmers with knowledge and resources necessary to navigate changing environmental conditions and market dynamics.
