New FICAC Commissioner Appointed Amid Controversy

Barbara Malimali has been appointed as the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Her appointment was confirmed by FICAC and comes through the Judicial Services Commission, with approval from the President.

According to section 5(1) of the FICAC Act 2007, the President appoints the Commissioner based on the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission, which must consult with the Attorney-General prior to making its recommendation.

In a separate development, FICAC has confirmed that a raid was conducted at the Election Commission yesterday, resulting in the seizure of documents related to the investigation involving Chairperson Barbara Malimali. She is currently facing allegations of abuse of office.
