Interim head coach Timoci Volavola has assembled a new roster for the Fiji women’s sevens rugby team, known as the Fijiana 7s, as they prepare for the upcoming season. With only three experienced players, including Ana Maria Naimasi, Volavola aims to rejuvenate support for the team following a disappointing 12th place finish at the Paris Olympic Games in August.
Volavola noted that a majority of last season’s squad has departed, but he remains optimistic as he prepares to confirm his 12-member selection after reviewing medical clearances. He has observed significant improvement in the skills of the new recruits since they began training together.
“This is a tough beginning considering last year’s results,” he acknowledged, recognizing the challenge ahead. However, he is committed to reviving enthusiasm for the women’s rugby team. “These players have stepped up, ready to compete for their spots.”
Under Volavola’s leadership, the team is focusing on enhancing discipline and a positive mindset both on and off the field. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a constructive environment, stating that any player not adhering to team rules would be asked to leave.
“My primary objective is to keep Fijiana in the top eight of the core teams,” Volavola expressed. The upcoming tournament represents a significant opportunity for many of the new players, and he is dedicated to ensuring they work hard to secure their positions within the core lineup.
Fijiana is set to face tough opponents in Pool A, including Australia, Ireland, and China. Volavola is aware of the challenge that lies ahead, particularly considering their performances in the Olympics. He emphasized the need for his team to recuperate from the long journey ahead of the matches.
With former sevens player Emosi Mulevoro assisting him, Volavola is determined to lead the team toward success and regain the confidence of fans and supporters.
In summary, the new direction under Timoci Volavola brings hope for the Fijiana 7s as they seek to rebuild and make a mark in women’s rugby. The influx of eager, young talent combined with a strong emphasis on discipline and culture could pave the way for a revitalized season and a positive outcome in the tournaments ahead.
