The upgraded risk-informed evacuation centre for the Yalobi villagers in Waya, Yasawa was inaugurated on Wednesday. The facility can accommodate over 200 individuals in case of future disasters.

Developed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management in collaboration with the UN Development Programme’s (UNDP) Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific project (Gov4Res), the project cost more than FJ$60,000.

The centre is designed to address various risks faced by vulnerable groups in the Yalobi community, featuring accessibility ramps for the disabled, an indoor kitchen, washrooms, and solar lighting.

These enhancements aim to ensure the safety and security of women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities during natural disasters.

During the opening ceremony, locals recalled the harrowing experience of fleeing Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, during which they had to trek uphill for three hours to find refuge in a cave. In recent disasters, villagers had to shelter in their homes due to the lack of proper evacuation facilities. They expressed gratitude to the Government, donors, and UNDP for this crucial support, highlighting it as a significant step toward enhancing their safety and well-being.

Jovesa Vocea, the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, underscored the necessity of integrating risk considerations into rural and maritime development to ensure long-term resilience.

He stated, “The Yalobi Evacuation Centre is a lifeline for the residents of this village, not merely a building.” Vocea also mentioned that the centre would serve as a community hub, promoting initiatives that empower local residents, particularly women and youth.

Furthermore, the centre will facilitate various socio-economic activities aimed at strengthening the local community in Yalobi.

Nicola Glendining, UNDP Pacific Gov4Res Project Manager, expressed her satisfaction in collaborating with the Ministry to bolster the resilience of rural communities in Fiji and implement the Ministry’s strategic priorities.
