New Evacuation Centre: A Lifeline for Yalobi Village

The newly upgraded risk-informed evacuation center was inaugurated for the residents of Yalobi in Waya, Yasawa on Wednesday. This facility will provide shelter for over 200 individuals during future disasters.

Constructed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management in collaboration with the UN Development Programme’s Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific project, this infrastructure has an investment exceeding FJ$60,000.

The center is designed to mitigate various risks faced by vulnerable community members, featuring ramps for accessibility, an indoor kitchen, washrooms, and solar lighting. These enhancements are aimed at ensuring the safety and security of women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities in the event of a natural calamity.

During the opening event, residents of Yalobi recounted their harrowing experience during Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, when they had to trek uphill for three hours to reach safety in a mountain cave. In recent disasters, villagers had to rely on their homes for refuge due to the absence of a designated evacuation facility. They expressed their gratitude to the Government, donors, and UNDP for this essential support, highlighting its role in bolstering their safety and well-being.

Jovesa Vocea, Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, underscored the significance of incorporating risk assessment into rural and maritime development to ensure long-term resilience.

Vocea characterized the Yalobi Risk Informed Evacuation Centre as a vital resource for the village, describing it as more than just a structure. He noted that during peaceful times, the center will also serve as a hub for community activities that aim to empower residents, particularly women and youth.

Furthermore, the center will be utilized for various socio-economic initiatives aimed at strengthening the local community of Yalobi. Nicola Glendining, Project Manager for UNDP Pacific Gov4Res, expressed pride in collaborating with the Ministry on enhancing the resilience of rural communities in Fiji and implementing the ministry’s strategic goals.
