The newly enhanced risk-informed evacuation center for the residents of Yalobi in Waya, Yasawa was inaugurated on Wednesday, providing shelter for over 200 individuals during future disasters.
Constructed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management in collaboration with the UN Development Programme’s Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific project, the facility cost more than FJ$60,000.
The center is designed to mitigate various risks faced by vulnerable groups in the Yalobi community, featuring ramps for accessibility for individuals with disabilities, an indoor kitchen, restrooms, and solar lighting. These upgrades will enhance the safety and security of women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities during natural disasters.
During the inauguration, local residents recounted their harrowing escape from Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, when they had to climb for three hours to reach safety in a cave. In recent disasters, many villagers were forced to seek refuge in their homes due to the lack of a proper evacuation facility. The villagers expressed their gratitude to the Government, donors, and UNDP for this timely support, which they believe will significantly enhance their safety and well-being.
Jovesa Vocea, the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, underscored the importance of integrating risk management in rural and maritime development to ensure long-term resilience.
He stated, “The Yalobi Evacuation Centre is a lifeline for the residents of this village, not merely a building,” adding that the center will also serve as a hub for community initiatives to empower local residents, particularly women and youth.
The center is expected to be utilized for various socio-economic activities aimed at strengthening the local community of Yalobi. Nicola Glendining, the UNDP Pacific Gov4Res Project Manager, expressed pride in their ongoing collaboration with the Ministry to enhance the resilience of rural communities in Fiji and to implement the Ministry’s strategic priorities.
