Esera Fofō Tuisano has made a notable entrance into his new role as Ulu-o-Tokelau, or Head of State, arriving for his first parliamentary session accompanied by his daughter by boat from Fenuafala. His inauguration was celebrated with a traditional ceremony known as Fakanofoga, where he engaged in local dances and rituals that underscored the cultural significance of his new position.
Tuisano represents Fakaofo, one of the three atolls in Tokelau, which is distinguished by its two main islets: Falē, the site of the meeting house, and Fenuafala, where essential services like the main hospital and school are located.
In his previous role, Tuisano was recognized as a “waste champion” due to his leadership in waste management. His political journey has also included serving as a member of the General Fono, where he gained experience as a representative for Fakaofo before becoming Faipule in 2020. Administrator of Tokelau, Don Higgins, has referred to Tuisano as a “reluctant” politician who possesses the capability to lead effectively.
During the ceremony, Higgins remarked on Tuisano’s knack for building consensus and promoting humor, expressing confidence that he would act in the best interests of Tokelau. “If I can facilitate the wishes and visions of my people, that would be a huge achievement for me,” Tuisano stated, highlighting his dedication to serving as a voice for the local population.
Throughout his leadership, Tuisano aims to inspire pride among the Tokelauan youth, encouraging them to uphold their cultural values and aspirations for the future. He reflects on Tokelau as his “heart and soul,” emphasizing the importance of unity and progress for their tiny nation.
