The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to reinvigorate its services following reinstatement by the government last year. In recent months, PWD has resumed operations after being closed by the previous administration. This revitalization was marked by the receipt of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers delivered in Suva on Wednesday.
The handover event took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, attended by officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport. Paula Baleilevuka, the ministry’s permanent secretary, highlighted that the timely arrival of these machines would significantly improve infrastructure and promote capacity building within the department.
Mr. Baleilevuka explained that these new machines are part of a larger set of equipment intended for the ministry, stating, “These machines will improve road standards and conditions and facilitate accessibility for economic activities. They will also enhance our capacity to undertake road construction and maintenance works in rural and remote areas.”
The newly received equipment includes two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, collectively valued at $1,627,104. For the current financial year, the ministry has been allocated $5 million dedicated to the enhancement and upgrade of rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka confirmed that the new equipment and vehicles would be utilized for upcoming projects.
