Fiji Revenue Customs has recently received a significant boost in its efforts to combat drug trafficking following the handover of high-tech drug detection equipment at Suva Wharf. This initiative, spearheaded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific and funded by the Japanese government, includes one TruNarc and two FirstDefender devices designed to strengthen border security against the importation and illegal exportation of narcotics and other harmful substances.
With this new equipment, border officials will be trained to accurately identify and classify drugs more efficiently, eliminating the extended waiting periods usually associated with official test results. This advancement in technology allows customs officers to scan and identify narcotics while keeping packages sealed, enhancing the reliability of evidence and reducing the risks associated with physical handling.
Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, underscored the critical role these devices play in safeguarding Fiji’s borders amidst rising concerns over drug-related issues, citing a recent major drug raid in Spain that served as a stark reminder of the global surge in drug crime. He emphasized that this situation demands immediate collective action.
The UNDP Pacific expressed that this effort is not just about enforcement; it encourages families to remain vigilant against the constant threat of drugs, which can devastate livelihoods. They highlighted the necessity for a comprehensive societal approach to tackling the escalation of drug-related offenses.
Fiji Revenue Customs remains optimistic about the potential of this new equipment to diminish crime and enhance public safety, fostering a more secure environment for its citizens. This positive development may encourage further initiatives that bolster law enforcement capabilities and protect community well-being.
In summary, this collaboration marks a proactive step towards addressing drug-related challenges in Fiji and reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its populace. The hope is that with these tools at their disposal, Fiji can create a safer future for its residents.
