A new direct flight route connecting Fiji and India is being prioritized due to the significant cultural similarities between the two countries. In an exclusive interview with Fiji One News, Fijian High Commissioner to India, His Excellency Jagnath Sami, highlighted the profound cultural, historical, and economic links that exist between Fiji and India. He expressed that this air connection will facilitate better cooperation in areas such as trade, tourism, and interpersonal relationships.
With a considerable segment of Fiji’s population having Indian ancestry, the introduction of a direct flight will simplify travel for Indo-Fijians, thereby nurturing personal ties and enhancing cultural connections. Sami emphasized the significance of the direct flight, stating, “This will help in promoting tourism. We need to lift our marketing here in India as well.”
Sami conveyed optimism that the new air route could pave the way for increased direct investments from India into Fiji, particularly in sectors like technology, agriculture, and renewable energy. “I think more tourists from India will go to Fiji if we establish this,” he remarked. Furthermore, he mentioned ongoing discussions with filmmakers and tour groups to highlight Fiji’s beauty on a global scale.
In support of these initiatives, Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad confirmed that discussions are progressing to set up this air route with India. “Everything is on the table; the relationship is developing, and we expect it to be much bigger in the future,” Professor Prasad noted. He also referred to statements made by the Prime Minister, emphasizing the strengthened relationship between Fiji and India over the past 18 months of their government.
