New Dignity Facility Empowers Recycling Heroes

Over 100 Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) at the Maururu Dumpsite in Ba celebrated the official opening of a new Dignity Facility. This portable washroom and breakroom facility is a crucial development achieved through the collaborative efforts of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, GlobalGiving, the R C Manubhai Group of Companies, and Ba Town Council.

For decades, CPR members have tirelessly collected recyclables for their daily survival without access to basic amenities such as water, washrooms, and clean, dignified spaces for meals or rest. This notable occasion marks a significant improvement in their working conditions.

The CPR workforce includes women, members of the LGBTQI+ community, and men from some of the most marginalised and vulnerable communities. Despite facing significant stigma, they play an essential role in addressing the country’s waste management challenges, helping to extend the lifespan of dumpsites and reduce carbon emissions.

This initiative is a continuation of a similar successful project at Vunato Dumpsite last year, reflecting PRF’s ongoing commitment to improving the conditions for CPR communities.

PRF Founder Amitesh Deo highlighted that despite the critical contributions of the CPR, they have long been underappreciated, unrecognised, and inadequately compensated. Deo emphasised that these workers deserve access to essential services and support from various stakeholders, including the government and municipalities. They should be recognised as essential workers, with allowances and health benefits.

“This Dignity Facility in Ba represents more than just infrastructure; it symbolises respect and recognition for the invaluable work these individuals do every day. Our goal is to provide them with the dignity they deserve and to inspire other stakeholders to join us in this mission,” said Deo.
