New Development Plan Promises Health Innovations for Fiji

The Coalition Government is poised to introduce its new National Development Plan (NDP), which aims to bring renewed hope and guidance for development in Fiji. This was discussed by Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, during his address at the Fiji Medical Association Annual Scientific Conference held in Nadi yesterday.

Dr. Lalabalavu expressed that the Ministry is eager to align its strategies with the new NDP, aiming to build a resilient health system that integrates innovation and technology to provide high-quality, evidence-based healthcare. This effort supports the vision of a healthy population in Fiji.

He also mentioned the Cabinet’s approval of the National HIV Surge Strategy, which he stated would be launched soon. Dr. Lalabalavu urged the Association’s support and collaboration in implementing this strategy, emphasizing the need for cooperation among multiple stakeholders to combat the spread of HIV within communities.

Dr. Lalabalavu acknowledged that the health sector, particularly public health, has encountered numerous challenges over the past few years, including issues related to infrastructure, human resources, quality of health services, and health financing.

Since the Coalition Government took office a year and a half ago, Dr. Lalabalavu noted that the Government has demonstrated a clear commitment to addressing these challenges through collaboration, innovation, and decisive action to enhance healthcare in Fiji.
