The government’s chief legal adviser, Attorney-General Graham Leung, has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new Deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement follows Rabuku’s recent departure from his role as acting DPP, which he held for five weeks.
The acting DPP, Nancy Tikoisuva, revealed Mr. Rabuku’s new position on Wednesday. Last month, Attorney-General Leung had requested Rabuku to step down from the acting DPP role after the Supreme Court deemed his appointment “ineligible.”
Leung emphasized that the constitution grants the DPP the authority to appoint their own staff without the need for consultation or approval from him or the Judicial Services Commission. He also pointed out that if the acting DPP takes leave, it does not automatically mean that the deputy will take over her responsibilities.
