New Deputy DPP Appointment Sparks Controversy

The Attorney-General, Graham Leung, has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement comes five weeks after Rabuku stepped down from his role as acting DPP.

Rabuku’s new position was officially disclosed by Nancy Tikoisuva, who is currently serving as acting DPP, on Wednesday. Previously, Leung advised Rabuku to resign from the acting DPP position following a Supreme Court ruling that deemed him “ineligible” for the role.

Leung stated, “Under the Constitution, the DPP is empowered to appoint his or her own staff,” emphasizing that such decisions rest solely with the DPP or the acting DPP, without the need for endorsement from the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General.

He also noted that if the acting DPP takes a leave of absence, it does not automatically mean that her deputy will take over her duties.
