The Attorney-General, Graham Leung, has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement follows Rabuku’s departure from his previous role as acting DPP just five weeks earlier. The appointment was made public by Nancy Tikoisuva, who is currently serving as the acting DPP.
Last month, Leung had advised Rabuku to step down from the acting DPP position after the Supreme Court deemed his appointment “ineligible.” He emphasized that, according to the Constitution, the DPP has the authority to appoint their own staff, and this decision rests solely with the DPP or their acting successor, rather than the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General.
Leung also stated that just because the acting DPP might take a leave of absence, it does not automatically mean that the deputy will take over those duties.
