Attorney-General Graham Leung has welcomed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement comes five weeks after Rabuku stepped down from his role as acting DPP. Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva officially disclosed Rabuku’s new appointment on Wednesday.
Last month, Attorney-General Leung requested that Rabuku leave his post as acting DPP following a Supreme Court ruling that deemed him ‘ineligible’ for the role. Leung noted that the Constitution grants the DPP the authority to appoint their own staff, emphasizing that such decisions are made solely by the DPP or the acting DPP, without the need for consultation or approval from the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General.
He also pointed out that if the acting DPP goes on leave, it is not guaranteed that the deputy will automatically take over the responsibilities.
