Residents along the Wainadoi-Galoa corridor will no longer need to travel to Suva to bid farewell to their loved ones once the renovation of the Raiwaqa (Navua) crematorium is finished.
Mangal Singh, president of the crematorium committee, announced that they received a $5,000 donation from Parveen’s Kava, which is expected to enhance the project’s funding and development.
The existing crematorium structure will be upgraded to provide additional seating capacity, with the refurbishment anticipated to take three months to complete.
“We are looking for donations to fund the construction of the building and the infrastructure for a gas-fired crematorium,” said Mr. Singh. “This initiative aligns with the Government’s plans, and all funds will be allocated specifically for this purpose.”
The estimated cost for infrastructure development, including fencing, is projected to be $350,000.
“This facility is designed to be multi-ethnic, welcoming everyone who wishes to pay their respects to loved ones,” Mr. Singh added. “Parveen’s Kava is among our first corporate donors, and we are hopeful that more businesses will contribute.”
Mr. Singh highlighted that the Navua community will benefit from this development by reducing transportation costs. “The community here is quite limited in resources. They cannot undertake this project alone, so we have established a committee to collect funds and donations.”
Future plans include an extension for caretaker quarters and a security guard post.
“This is not designed to be a profit-making venture. Any fees charged will only cover the costs of security, maintenance, and insurance.”
