A significant effort has begun to construct a community hall that will also serve as a shelter during adverse weather conditions for the residents of Vuci, Tailevu. This was highlighted by Joji Butadroka, the leader of community development in Vuci.
Joji mentioned that this initiative follows the recent leadership of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who announced new funding during a regional meeting held in Vuci recently. The project has received support that dates back to 2009 and saw a brief pause before resuming in 2012.
In recent years, government assistance has been provided under the ‘village improvement scheme’ to help complete the construction of this community hall. The total cost for this project is estimated at $790,000.
Joji explained that the new hall will benefit the residents by providing protection, especially since they live near small streams that can frequently overflow.
He stated that the village of Vuci is home to 67 households, with nearly 300 residents.
“Previously, during storms or severe weather, we had to seek shelter in private homes, church buildings, or nearby structures. With this community hall, we will have a designated place to gather and feel safe,” he noted.
Furthermore, Joji added that the hall will also include facilities for emergency shelter for those who do not have adequate housing.
The hall will also house a dispensary, a youth resource center, and a women’s resource center, all of which are essential for community support.
The regional meeting has expressed anticipation that the community hall will enhance local governance and provide a venue for various educational sessions.
