New Classrooms Spark Educational Growth in Fiji

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, encouraged students at Dreketi Central College (DCC) in Macuata to embrace their opportunities for learning during a recent visit. The ambassador attended a handover ceremony for three newly constructed classrooms funded by the Japanese Government, with the assistance of Coalition Government ministers, including Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad.

The investment of $333,784 was part of the Japanese Government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program. During the ceremony, Mr. Rokuichiro emphasized that the new classrooms symbolize a gateway to knowledge and educational advancement. In addition, the college received three sets of tables and chairs for teachers and 120 new desks and chairs for students.

He urged the students to take responsibility for the resources they have and to use them wisely, highlighting the strong diplomatic ties between Japan and Fiji, particularly in the field of education. Minister Prasad expressed his pride in witnessing the development of his former school and acknowledged the ambassador’s contributions, noting that the improved facilities would greatly benefit the students at DCC.

Savenaca Vakacego, the school manager, shared his determination to achieve the construction of the cyclone-resilient classrooms and acknowledged the importance of the funding from the Japanese government. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, saying the support would be remembered by students, teachers, and parents alike.
