New Classrooms Open Doors to Knowledge in Fiji

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, encouraged students at Dreketi Central College (DCC) in Macuata to embrace their educational opportunities during a visit on Friday. He emphasized the importance of academic growth as he attended a ceremony for the handover of three newly built classrooms funded by the Japanese Government.

The construction, valued at $333,784, was made possible through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) initiative. Ambassador Rokuichiro stated that the new classrooms symbolize a gateway to knowledge and the potential for educational development. In addition to the funding for the classrooms, the school received three tables and chairs for teachers, along with 120 desks and chairs for students.

During his speech, Rokuichiro urged the students to take responsibility for the resources they have received and to use them effectively. “We share a strong bilateral relationship with Fiji, and supporting education is an area where we continuously strive to make an impact,” he remarked.

Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, expressed pride in witnessing the development of quality infrastructure at his former school. He acknowledged the ambassador’s contributions, highlighting how the new classrooms would benefit the entire student body at the college.

School manager Savenaca Vakacego shared his commitment to ensuring the construction of cyclone-resistant classrooms. Having managed the school for seven years, he noted that the Japanese government’s support came at an opportune moment. “Your assistance will be remembered by our community, students, teachers, and parents,” Vakacego stated.

He also reflected on the project’s journey from conception to realization, noting that patience was crucial. Currently, the school’s enrollment for Years 9-13 stands at 364, with a technical college also in operation.
