New Classrooms: A Bright Future for Fiji’s Students

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, addressed students at Dreketi Central College in Macuata on Friday, encouraging them to embrace knowledge and pursue academic growth. The ambassador participated in a handover ceremony for three newly built classrooms, which were funded by the Japanese Government.

The total funding of $333,784 was provided through the Japanese Government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program. Mr. Rokuichiro stated that the new classrooms symbolize an opening to educational opportunities. The funding also included the provision of three tables and chairs for teachers, along with 120 new desks and chairs for the students.

He urged the students to take responsibility for the resources given to them and to use them wisely. “We have a strong bilateral relationship with Fiji, and we always strive to enhance education,” he noted.

Finance Minister Biman Prasad expressed his pride in seeing his former school benefit from such improved infrastructure, acknowledging the ambassador’s support. He emphasized that the new classrooms will positively impact all students at the college.

School manager Savenaca Vakacego reflected on his commitment to ensuring the school had new cyclone-resistant classrooms, stating that the timing of the Japanese government’s funding was ideal. “Your assistance will never be forgotten by our community, students, teachers, and parents,” Mr. Vakacego said.

He highlighted the patience required since the project was envisioned and proposed to the Japanese Government. The school currently serves 364 students across Years 9 to 13 and operates a technical college as well.
