The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens, scheduled for December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, is set to introduce an exciting new set of by-laws aimed at enhancing the tournament experience. According to tournament director Solo Finau, a bonus points system has been implemented to benefit all participating teams.

Organizers aim to attract 80 teams through a four-tier competition format. Tier One will host champion teams, Tier Two will be for standard teams, Tier Three will accommodate senior women’s squads, and Tier Four will focus on the Under-19 teams.

Finau emphasized the need for innovation to rekindle interest in sevens tournaments across the nation. He noted that these changes are designed to support both the financial well-being of the teams and the overall development of the players. “We are changing the competition format so that our local players learn to excel under pressure,” he remarked.

Highlighting tactics often used in international play, Finau pointed out that successful teams in World Cups frequently win through strategic drop goals, urging local teams to utilize their natural skills to secure victories.

One of the key features of the tournament will be instant rewards, which include $100 cash prizes awarded immediately after matches for specific achievements. Players making a coast-to-coast individual try from their own “In-Goal space” will receive this instant reward, as will teams that achieve a coast-to-coast team try. Additional rewards will be available for teams with the highest number of converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals.

Teams also have the chance to win $100 by breaking or equating to Alosio Naduva’s record of 6.78 seconds for the fastest team try, provided it occurs within a timeframe of 7 to 14 seconds without stoppages from the kick-off.

Sanctioned by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), the tournament is set to launch on December 6.

The implementation of these innovative rules and reward systems represents a positive shift for local rugby, promising to enhance competitive spirits while developing player skills and teamwork. It’s a step towards creating a more engaging and vibrant rugby culture in Fiji, possibly inspiring the next generation of athletes.

In summary, the Nataleira Sevens is not only aimed at enhancing the tournament experience but also at fostering growth and development in local rugby through innovative competition formats and immediate rewards, which can help elevate the skill level of players while making the game more exciting for both participants and fans.
