The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens is gearing up for an exciting tournament scheduled from December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. To enhance the competition and engage participants, tournament director Solo Finau has announced new by-laws that include a bonus points system designed to benefit all teams involved.
The tournament aims to attract 80 teams, divided into four tiers: Tier One for champion teams, Tier Two for regular teams, Tier Three for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four for Under-19 competitors. Finau expressed optimism that these innovative changes would rejuvenate interest in sevens tournaments across the nation, while also providing financial incentives and development opportunities for players.
Finau commented on the format changes, stating that they aim to encourage local players to excel in high-pressure situations. He emphasized that victories could come from skilled plays like drop goals, which have historically led teams to success in World Cups.
In addition to the bonus points, the tournament will offer instant rewards immediately after matches. Players will receive $100 for a coast-to-coast individual try, while team captains will also earn $100 for the coast-to-coast team try. Additional cash prizes will be awarded for various achievements, including the highest number of converted tries or drop goals.
Excitingly, teams will have the chance to earn rewards for outstanding performances, such as breaking the record for the fastest try, inspired by Alosio Naduva’s impressive 6.78-second record. The Fiji Rugby Union has sanctioned the tournament, which will officially kick off with a launch event on December 6.
With the introduction of these innovative rules and rewards, there is great potential for the Nataleira Sevens to not only entertain but also elevate the standard of local rugby, fostering talent and passion for the sport.
This approach could reinvigorate rugby culture in the region and encourage the community to rally around these emerging players and teams.
