Viliame Magitilailai is eager to begin his secondary education at Marist Brothers High School (MBHS) this year. Hailing from Tokou Village in the district of Nasinu, Ovalau, Magitilailai earned distinction as the dux of Marist Convent School in Levuka last year. Receiving this accolade served as a bittersweet farewell as he prepares to leave Levuka for his studies in Suva.
Alongside him, Gabriel Rarawa from Visoto Village in the district of Lovoni has also secured a place at MBHS. At the recent prizegiving ceremony for Marist Convent, Annie Robinson, a sales and marketing manager at The Fiji Times and an alumnus of the school, served as the chief guest.
Founded in 1882, MBHS has a rich history of educating influential Fijians, including the late Tui Nayau, former president Ratu Kamisese Mara, and Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa. In her speech, Ms. Robinson congratulated the students and teachers on their accomplishments and extended best wishes to all Year 8 students transitioning to secondary school this year.
Last year, the school had an enrollment of 329 students, providing quality education to many youths from around Ovalau Island, with 45 Year 8 students graduating.
This new chapter in Magitilailai’s life indicates not just a personal achievement but also the continuation of a legacy of academic excellence within the region. His journey is a source of inspiration for many as he steps confidently into the next phase of his education, symbolizing hope and potential for the future.
