Viliame Magitilailai is eagerly preparing to embark on his secondary school journey at Marist Brothers High School (MBHS) this year. Hailing from Tokou Village in the Nasinu district of Ovalau, Magitilailai excelled academically, earning the title of dux at Marist Convent School in Levuka last year.
His achievement, while celebratory, marks a bittersweet transition as he bids farewell to Levuka and sets his sights on studying in Suva. Joining him at MBHS is Gabriel Rarawa, the head boy from Visoto Village in Lovoni.
Annie Robinson, the Sales and Marketing manager at Fiji Times and an alumna of Marist Convent, served as the chief guest at the school’s prize-giving ceremony. During her address, she extended her congratulations to all students and teachers for their hard work throughout the academic year, particularly encouraging Year 8 students as they step into the next phase of their education.
Established in 1882, MBHS has a rich history of educating notable Fijians, including the late Tui Nayau, former President Ratu Kamisese Mara, and Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa. Last year, Marist Convent School graduated 45 Year 8 students from a school roll of 329, highlighting its role in providing quality education to many from Ovalau Island.
As Magitilailai and his peers transition to their new school, it symbolizes hope for their future and the continued legacy of education in their communities.
Through the lens of Magitilailai’s journey, we see not just a personal achievement, but a bright future for young Fijians, supported by a history of educational excellence and community encouragement. This transition also serves as a reminder of the importance of education in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
