Viliame Magitilailai is eagerly anticipating the start of his secondary school journey at Marist Brothers High School (MBHS) this year. Hailing from Tokou Village in the district of Nasinu, Ovalau, Magitilailai distinguished himself as the dux at Marist Convent School in Levuka last year. Winning this prestigious award was both a proud achievement and a bittersweet farewell for the young student, who will be leaving Levuka to pursue his studies in Suva.
Alongside Magitilailai, Gabriel Rarawa from Visoto Village in Lovoni also earned a place at MBHS this year. The recent prizegiving ceremony at Marist Convent School, where Annie Robinson, the Sales and Marketing manager of Fiji Times and an alumna of the school, served as the chief guest, marked this significant transition.
Marist Convent School, established in 1882, has a rich history of educating many notable Fijians, including the late Tui Nayau, former president Ratu Kamisese Mara, and Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa. During her address, Robinson praised both students and teachers for their hard work throughout the academic year and wished all the Year 8 graduates good luck as they embark on their new ventures in secondary education.
Last year, the school had a total enrollment of 329 students, providing quality education to many from Ovalau Island. Of these, 45 Year 8 students graduated, marking a successful conclusion to their primary school journey.
This narrative highlights the importance of education in shaping future leaders and the continuity of a legacy of excellence at Marist Convent School. As students like Viliame Magitilailai step into their next chapter, they carry with them the hopes and encouragement of their educators and mentors, poised to make further strides in their academic pursuits.
