The unveiling of the new $29 million Ba Court complex yesterday signifies a significant advancement in the judiciary’s efforts to decentralize its services, bringing them closer to communities. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated at the opening ceremony, underscoring the government’s dedication to strengthening the rule of law and ensuring equitable access to justice for everyone.
Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that every citizen has the legal right to pursue justice, highlighting that the inauguration of the Ba facility represents a notable achievement in this regard. The new complex, equipped with modern amenities, will alleviate the workload of the existing Ba Court and facilitate greater efficiency.
A key development within the complex is the establishment of a High Court, which will allow litigants from Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, and surrounding areas—including the remote regions of Bukuya and Nadarivatu—to avoid lengthy travel to Lautoka for high court proceedings. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for those seeking legal recourse.
“The Coalition Government remains steadfast in its commitment to fortifying the rule of law, improving justice access, and ensuring that all citizens can exercise their rights under the law,” Mr. Rabuka stated. He reiterated that these rights are meaningless unless actively exercised.
The opening event was attended by numerous distinguished guests, including senior judiciary officials and cabinet ministers. The new High Court will handle a variety of matters, including appeals related to the Central Agricultural Tribunal, civil cases, criminal issues, and family law.
In his remarks, Mr. Rabuka praised the judiciary for its ongoing commitment to advancing its constitutional responsibilities and delivering justice effectively. He noted that through collective efforts, the nation can journey toward sustainable growth and realize the vision of a prosperous Fiji. He called for unity in building a more sustainable and resilient future for the generations to come.
Overall, this new court complex is a hopeful development for the region, representing progress in legal accessibility and reinforcing the commitment to a justice system that serves all citizens effectively.
