The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) is set to begin construction of a new $7.1 million (FJ$16 million) building complex, which will accommodate its Regional Fisheries Surveillance Centre (RFSC) starting next year. This modern facility aims to bolster maritime surveillance and foster cooperation among the FFA’s 17 member countries.

Equipped with cutting-edge monitoring technologies, the RFSC will provide real-time Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), enabling rapid and informed responses to maritime threats. It will play a crucial role in addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Pacific waters.

FFA director-general Dr. Manu Tupou-Roosen emphasized that the new center represents a unifying effort among members. He cited the achievements of the FFA in leading global tuna fisheries management and development, highlighting the agency’s dedication to serving its members. Dr. Tupou-Roosen stated, “While we recognize these amazing achievements, we always remember that what lies at the center of our work is our people. Always remembering why we do what we do, and why we work together: Our People, Our Fisheries, Our Future.”

The RFSC is expected to serve as the central hub for all FFA surveillance activities, aiding its members in overseeing the vast Pacific Ocean, which covers approximately 30 million square miles. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, on October 25, and construction is projected to take two years.

The FFA is dedicated to assisting its members in the sustainable management of fishery resources within their 200-mile exclusive economic zones (EEZs), ensuring a bright future for fisheries across the region.

This initiative reflects a collective commitment to sustainable fisheries management and regional security. The new center may significantly improve the efficacy of surveillance operations, aiming for a more secure and environmentally responsible Pacific Ocean.
