Sereana Korovulavula, a 45-year-old mother of six, exemplifies the belief that it’s never too late to pursue formal education. Currently enrolled in the Matua Programme at Nabua Secondary School, she is one of 9,088 Year 13 students who recently sat for their external examinations across the nation.
Despite the challenges posed by her age and responsibilities, Korovulavula remains resolute in her quest for academic achievement, crediting her family as her primary source of motivation. “It has never been easy, but I know it will be worth it,” she expressed. After successfully completing Year 12 last year, she is optimistic about finishing Year 13 as well.
Originally from Nabudrau Village in Rewa, Korovulavula moved to Suva after the first wave of COVID-19, when her husband sought employment. While he works as a mechanic, she balances her studies with caring for their youngest child, who is just three years old. Her eldest son, now a flight attendant, is providing financial support for her examinations amidst ongoing financial difficulties.
Motivated by her children’s needs and aspirations, Korovulavula hopes that her education will enable her to secure a job, alleviating some of the financial strain on her family. “I have a good command of English, I am computer literate, and I passed my previous examinations with good marks,” she stated, showcasing her determination despite the challenges she faces.
She intends to pursue courses in human resources and finance at the university level and encourages others who have dropped out of school to consider the Matua programme. “They have excellent teachers dedicated to educating their students,” she affirmed, expressing gratitude for the opportunities afforded to her.
This story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and the transformative power of education. Despite her circumstances, Korovulavula is a living testament that with determination, support, and hard work, it is indeed possible to chase one’s dreams at any age.
Her journey not only inspires others but also highlights the importance of education as a catalyst for change, offering hope for a brighter future for her children and community.
