Fiji’s netball community is facing a significant divide, as 15 associations have opted to boycott a Special General Meeting amid concerns regarding governance lapses within Netball Fiji. Alumeci Sachs, the President of the Suva Netball Association, expressed the associations’ grievances, which include a perceived centralization of power within the organization that undermines democratic processes.
At the crux of the discontent is the role of the National President of Netball Fiji, who also serves as a trustee of the organization. The 15 associations are calling for legal advice and plan to notify World Netball and the Ministry of Justice over issues they believe warrant deregistration of Netball Fiji. Sachs outlined that the collective voice of these associations is critical, emphasizing, “Without us they are nothing,” underscoring the contributions of major associations like Suva and Lautoka.
The associations have presented a list of 12 motions which have reportedly not been adequately addressed by Netball Fiji officials. These motions involve key issues such as the management and selection of national teams, calls for a review of the governing constitution, and protests against current voting practices that limit input from associations in decision-making processes. Sachs specifically highlighted a desire for voting rights to be limited to the President for fairness and accountability.
This situation reflects a pattern of unrest that has been echoed in previous reports about dissatisfaction with governance and performance within Netball Fiji. During the recent Annual General Meeting, sentiments were voiced about the lack of support for grassroots development and the shortcomings in aiding local associations.
Nevertheless, amidst these challenges, there is hope for constructive change. The ongoing dialogue among stakeholders and the upcoming Special General Meeting provide a critical opportunity for reform that could revitalize Fiji’s netball landscape. If the leadership embraces these calls for change, it may lead to a more inclusive, transparent, and effective governance structure while enhancing the sport’s development across the nation. This situation could serve as a pivotal moment for restructuring that benefits all involved and enhances Fiji’s performance on the international stage.
