There is a pressing need to enhance local netball competitions this year, according to RubyAnn Sorovaki, the president of Netball Fiji. She emphasized that improving the quality and frequency of tournaments across the nation is essential for expanding the pool of players eligible for national teams.
Sorovaki remarked, “We need to intensify our competitions to allow for selection of players into the high performance teams.” By strengthening pathways from club-level competitions to national representation, the organization aims to create more opportunities for emerging talent.
Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of hosting quality games, which would facilitate broader selection opportunities at all levels of the sport. Grassroots development remains a priority, and the federation plans to collaborate closely with all stakeholders to support local districts in organizing games and building capacity among members.
In related news, the Fiji Pearls extended squads will regroup for fitness testing today at the HPU Gym in Laucala, starting at 8:30 AM. A total of 56 players have been invited to join the extended squad under the guidance of interim head coach Jioweli Vakamoce.
This emphasis on local competition underscores the proactive approach of Netball Fiji in nurturing talent and fostering growth in the sport. By investing in grassroots initiatives and quality competitions, there is significant potential for cultivating future stars of netball in Fiji, creating a hopeful outlook for the sport in the country.
