Negotiation Deadline Looms for Fijian Teachers

The Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) has set a deadline for the Ministry of Education, the Public Service Commission (PSC), and the Ministry of Finance to engage in good faith negotiations by next week. General Secretary Paula Manumanunitoga stated that the association would seek a secret ballot for potential strike action if the involved parties refuse to negotiate effectively.

The FTA’s earlier request for a secret ballot was denied by the Registrar of Trade Unions, prompting members to once again engage in negotiations with the two primary ministries. Manumanunitoga emphasized that the association has given these bodies a chance to negotiate sincerely following a general meeting resolution. He noted that during a recent meeting, representatives from the Ministry of Finance were absent, which was disappointing given their importance in the discussions.

The FTA plans to wait until Fiji Day for a resolution; if no progress is made, they will reapply for a secret ballot. Manumanunitoga acknowledged that the only encouraging news so far is the reported support for a salary increase from the Minister of Education, Aseri Radrodro, and permanent secretary Selina Kuruleca.

He expressed appreciation for their backing, indicating that they are working behind the scenes to advocate for the pay rise. However, he stressed that the Government appears to be unresponsive to the teachers’ concerns.

Earlier this month, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad reiterated that the FTA should address grievances with its relevant line ministries, indicating that the Ministry of Finance does not handle negotiations with teacher unions directly. He advised that any issues should be dealt with within the frameworks of the Government, the PSC, and the Ministry of Civil Service.
