Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has expressed serious concerns regarding the poor condition of the road adjacent to Savusavu Airport. Lal, a local resident, noted that this important route has been downgraded from a tar-sealed surface to gravel, leading to an increase in accidents and excessive dust that impacts both drivers and nearby residents.
He stated that the situation underscores a neglect of infrastructure and raises concerns about the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government. “Savusavu is a vibrant tourism hub, attracting visitors from around the world who come to enjoy its unique beauty and charm. The airport is one of only two airstrips that enable air travel to the island. The condition of the road leading to this gateway goes beyond a local issue; it is a matter of national significance,” he remarked.
Lal emphasized the importance of a smooth, safe, and dependable road to support the tourism industry, which is essential for the economy and provides jobs for many Fijians. He pointed out that the conversion of the road to gravel has serious implications. The rise in accidents endangers the safety of citizens, while the dust from passing vehicles poses health risks and is a nuisance for local residents.
“This is not just an inconvenience; it reflects a clear failure to deliver safe and reliable infrastructure, which is a fundamental obligation of any government,” he stressed. Lal is demanding an explanation from the Fiji Roads Authority regarding this decision and questioned whether they have the necessary funding for proper road maintenance.
He criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for spending government funds on a lavish dinner, suggesting that those resources could have been better used for resealing the critical road, benefiting the community rather than indulging in unnecessary luxury.
“This situation highlights misplaced priorities and a lack of accountability. The government’s duty is to serve the people, ensuring their safety and well-being. Neglecting vital infrastructure like roads demonstrates a disregard for these responsibilities,” he noted.
Lal urged the government to take immediate action by providing the necessary funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the resealing of the road near Savusavu Airport. He concluded by stating that this action is not merely about fixing a road; it is about restoring trust in leadership and showing a commitment to the welfare of all Fijians.
